The Friendly Skies

Now that hunting seasons are coming to a close, I should probably get back to work! I apologize for my absence.

Today’s topic was brought to my attention through a variety of sources and is of concern to sportsmen who travel via air to hunting destinations.

United Airlines has a troubling policy that now prohibits the transportation of antlers.

Excerpt:
United Airlines does not accept antlers or animal horns as checked or carry-on baggage on any flights.

Obviously, this can create some serious issues for hunters when flying home from successful hunts.

I realize I am aging myself, once again, in remembering the day when United advertised themselves as the customer service oriented airline but here goes:

The 1982 television commercial was pretty specific… “come fly the friendly skies”.

Well, in 2009, the skies are not so friendly if you happen to be a sportsman.

When it comes to business practices, there are two wonderful things about being in America.

1. Businesses can still (for the most part) provide services to their customers as they please. Being a small business owner, I can appreciate that freedom.

2. Consumers can pick and choose with which businesses they spend their money based upon those services – or lack thereof.

United Airlines most certainly has the right not to accept antlers on their flights and sportsmen, in turn, certainly have the right to select other airlines who are more “friendly”.

Personally, I abhor the cattle-truck mentality adopted by airlines in general nowadays and I prefer to use other means of transportation when possible.

However, I can assure United that my shadow will definitely not grace their doorstep so long as sportsmen are treated in such an unfriendly manner.

How nice to still have a choice…
