The First Deer

Feb 24, 02:39 AM by Daniel D. Lamoreux

I found a great story this morning that I’d like to share simply because it illustrates what the sport of hunting is all about.

Before I do, however, I want to offer a Thank You to the Reporter-Times, the publication that ran this story. There are so few media outlets this day and age that promote the hunting sports by telling our stories.

Give these folks a round of applause!!

Now for the story entitled Martinsville fourth grader tells of hunting experience and first deer. It starts like this:

Opening day of Indiana’s gun season for deer this year was a day I have looked forward to for a long time. I turned 10 years old this year and my Dad always told me that’s when I could be a hunter, not just a spectator. I got to go along on many hunts during my short life and watch while all the grown ups did all the hunting. Opening day for hunting season has always been exciting over the years but this year is extra special because its my first time to actually participate in the hunt.

There’s nothing like a good hunting tale but what really brings this adventure home is the final paragraph.

Excerpt:
I have been fortunate enough to grow up in a family of outdoorsmen, hunters and fishermen. This deer season will be a lifelong memory for me. All the effort Dad and I put into this deer season and the grand prize we had to show for all our time and work was right here in front of us. I can only wish that some day I will have the opportunity to share this same type of experience with a 10-year-old boy. Maybe that 10-year-old boy will be my son.

Amen!

CONGRATULATIONS CAMERON!!!
